Understanding Your Home’s Heating System: A Beginner’s Guide

How does a heating system work? Your boiler, pump, pipes and radiators all play a part.

If you’ve ever looked at your boiler or thermostat and thought, “I have no idea how this works,” you’re not alone. Most homeowners rely on their heating systems every day but don’t fully understand how they work—or what to do when something goes wrong.

At BCA Plumbing, Heating and Gas Services, we believe that a little knowledge can go a long way in helping you take better care of your home. So here’s a simple guide to help you understand your heating system.

The Basics: What Makes Up a Home Heating System?

A typical heating system includes:

Boiler or Heat Source: This is the engine of your heating system. It heats water which is then sent through pipes to radiators or underfloor heating.

Radiators or Underfloor Heating: These distribute the heat around your home.

Thermostat: This monitors and controls the temperature.

Timer/Programmer: Allows you to schedule when the heating comes on and off.

Pipes and Valves: These transport and regulate the flow of hot water.

How Does It Work?

1. You set the temperature on your thermostat or timer.

2. When the room drops below that temperature, the thermostat sends a signal to your boiler.

3. The boiler heats up water and sends it through the pipes to your radiators or underfloor heating system.

4. Once the room reaches the desired temperature, the boiler switches off automatically.

Simple, right? But there are a few different types of systems you might have…

Types of Heating Systems

1. Combi Boiler Systems

Heats water instantly – no storage tank needed.

Great for smaller homes or households with one bathroom.

Most common type in the UK.

2. System Boilers

Uses a separate hot water cylinder (but no water tank).

Ideal for homes with more than one bathroom.

3. Conventional Boilers (Regular/Heat Only)

Requires both a hot water cylinder and a cold water storage tank (usually in the loft).

Best for larger homes with multiple bathrooms and high hot water demand.

Common Heating Problems

Cold Radiators: Could be air in the system—try bleeding them.

Low Boiler Pressure: Usually caused by a small leak or bleeding radiators.

No Hot Water: May be a problem with your thermostat, timer, or the boiler itself.

Strange Noises: Banging, gurgling, or whistling often indicate trapped air, sludge buildup, or pump issues.

If in doubt, don’t guess—always call a professional.

How to Keep Your Heating System in Good Shape

Annual Boiler Service: Essential for safety, efficiency, and warranty compliance.

Bleed Radiators in Autumn: Get rid of trapped air before winter kicks in.

Check Pressure Regularly: Should sit between 1 and 2 bar.

Install a Smart Thermostat: Control your heating remotely and save money.
